Industrial Visit at “Salem Steel Plant, Salem(SAIL)”
2nd Feb, 2026
A one-day Industrial Visit programme was conducted for the second & third year Automobile and Mechanical Engineering students on 31.01.2026 at the Salem Steel Plant, Salem (SAIL). A total of 56 students took part in this industrial visit initiative.
The primary objective of the visit was to provide students with industrial exposure to the advancements in Manufacturing Technology. The plant was to produce stainless steel and special alloy steels, mainly in hot rolled and cold rolled forms.
Key Learning Highlights:
- Understood the integrated stainless steel manufacturing process from raw material to finished product.
- Learned about steel melting practices, alloying elements, and their role in producing different grades of stainless steel.
- Observed the working of Hot Rolling Mill (HRM) and Cold Rolling Mill (CRM) operations.
- Gained knowledge of annealing and pickling processes used to improve mechanical properties and surface finish.
- Studied various types of stainless steels (austenitic, ferritic, martensitic) and their applications.
- Learned about quality control and testing methods followed to meet international standards.
- Understood the importance of safety practices and protective equipment in a steel plant environment.
- Gained exposure to industrial automation and process control systems used in steel manufacturing.
- Learned about waste management and environmental protection measures adopted by SAIL.
- Understood the role of Salem Steel Plant in supporting national infrastructure and industrial growth.
An industrial visit was organized to Salem Steel Plant (SSP), a unit of Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL), to gain practical exposure to stainless steel manufacturing processes. The visit helped bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and real-time industrial practices.
