The Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering, Paavai College of Engineering in association with Institution Innovation Council & Research Development Cell (IPR) successfully organized online workshop titled “IP Awareness & Patent Filling Workshop” on 20th February 2026.
Ms. Srinithi S, second-year EEE, welcomed the gathering and Ms. Harishna A, a second-year EEE, introduced the resource person.
Dr. V. Hariharan, Principal, Paavai College of Engineering, delivered the presidential address, in which he elaborated that, We are living in an era where ideas are the most valuable assets. Innovation is no longer confined to laboratories, it is happening in classrooms, startups, industries and research centers. However, an idea becomes truly powerful only when it is protected. This is where Intellectual Property (IP) plays a vital role.
Mrs P Seetha B.E., L.L.B., Partner & Patent Attorney, Remfry & Sagar, Chennai, served as the resource person for the online workshop. She explained Intellectual Property Rights safeguard the creations of the human mind—innovations, designs, technologies, software, artistic works and research outcomes. Among them, patents are particularly important for researchers and technologists, as they provide exclusive rights to inventors and encourage technological advancement.
She also stated that in academic institutions, often focus on publishing research papers. While publications contribute to knowledge dissemination, patent filing ensures ownership, commercialization potential and societal impact. A strong patent culture enhances institutional ranking, promotes industry collaboration and supports the vision of an innovation-driven economy.
Finally, the vote of thanks was proposed by Ms. Srinithi S, a second-year student. The online workshop was successfully concluded. The session was highly informative and enriched the participants with valuable knowledge. Mr P Gopinathan, Mrs S A Nivethaa coordinated the online workshop along with other faculty members. Around 75 participants actively took part in the workshop.
