GUEST LECTURE ON "REMOTE SENSING AND GIS"
A Guest lecture programme on "Remote Sensing and GIS" was organized for the students of Civil Engineering Departments of Paavai Institutions in Prestige hall on 10the December 2011.
Smt. Mangai Natarajan, the correspondent, Paavai Institutions presided over the function. Dr.S.R.Ramanan, Director, Cyclone Warning Center, Indian Meteorological Division, Chennai was the chief guest.
The Correspondent delivered the presidential address. In her address she said that the students should strengthen their communication skills and technical skill. As civil engineers they should gain thorough knowledge about their area of construction in terms of locality, and other environmental factors. Besides they should give importance to cost benefits and effectiveness involved in the process of construction, while doing so, the engineers need to converse with their clients in their respective vernacular in order to convince them as well as gain their confidence. Students should plant trees in and around their surroundings to make the climate very pleasant. Planting a lot of neem trees will make the area dense and this will directly or indirectly help the whole environment to get plenty of rain. The Switzerland is providing a lot of funds to protect our marshy land, because indirectly they get benefitted.
She also said that the farmers gather information about the weather before farming and fishermen approach meteorological department before they go for fishing. As agriculture is the pulse of our nation, it is expected that within a short span of time the students may come forward to take care of farming by implementing modern techniques.
The chief guest in his keynote address said that the Metrological division is growing bigger and getting fine tuned and there is no boundary for the weather condition and all the countries work together as a single unit by adopting all the new inventions and technologies.
He also insisted that the students must continue to be learners, even after the completion of graduation, post-graduation and getting a job. To progress in life, one has to prolong to be a student. He said that the Pilot has to get three clearances before the take-off operation. They are metrological clearance (for climate situation), communication clearance (for the frequency of communication), and air-traffic clearance (height of travel). Thus the department of metrological science plays a vital role in human society.
He also mentioned that in those days the communication was sent only through tele communication which was very slow. And nowadays the invention of internet helps to transmit the report of satellite very fast. Huge volume of data is being transferred within a second. And with the help of a satellite, it is made easy to monitor the happening of the sea and the ocean also.
He also expressed the different techniques used in the forecasting of the weather. At the end there was an interactive session.
Prof.K.K.Ramasamy, Director- Administration, Mr.S.Srinivasan, Director (Placement & Training), The Principals of Paavai Institutions, HODs, faculty members and Civil Department students of Paavai Institutions participated and got benefitted.
Dr.C.Jegadheesan, principal, Paavai Engineering college, welcomed the gathering and Ms.R.Nivedha of III B.E Civil of Paavai Engineering College, proposed the Vote of Thanks.
